Ilya Naishuller's Hardcore Henry is one of those truly unique films-a video game brought to life, shot entirely from the first-person perspective. This required seamlessly stitching together hundreds of chaotic individual shots into a series of much longer, more complex sequences, utilizing some of the most invisible VFX I've ever seen. The film achieves something rare in cinema: making the camera the protagonist.
With the titular character always hidden behind the camera, the audience can only infer the protagonist's emotions based on the camera and Sharlto Copley's movements. This required incredibly specific camera work and extreme efforts from the operators. It's genuinely amazing that no one was seriously injured on set or that no VFX artist suffered from overwork due to the sheer amount of invisible VFX necessary to tie it all together.
To understand why this film was so complex and dangerous, and why nothing like it has really been attempted since, grab your "nice" jacket and GoPro as we dive into the literal insanity of how they brought an entire video game to life on a modest budget of just two million dollars!
Spoiler alert: it was made by Russians. That’s how

Without a doubt, some of the best visual effects ever in a movie. Modern big budget movies should be embarrassed because the majority of these special effects driven movies simply pale in comparison. District 9 was amazing!

Practical effects require an intense setup, but the payoff is absurd. Spiderman 2 is a prime example of how practical is incredibly tough to set up, but how the sheer level of results it delivers makes such a massive difference in quality and lasting strength. I've always said practical effects outweigh CGI in every way, not because of difficulty, or ease, but rather immersion. Practical effects make a huge impact on actor performance, as well as immersion. The physical object makes such a massive difference in how things connect in the film. That connection is lost when CGI fills this place. CGI can look absolutely amazing. But I think if it could be done practical, it should be. When done right, practical effects make a movie look and feel better than when CGI is done right.

genuine question. why is she hulk even cgi? from what i can see its mostly talking, is makeup just not a thing anymore? i get why hulk is cgi, no shit but she hulk's features arent any bit outlandish its literally just a mildly buff green woman

This movie was so underappreciated, but at the same time I think it's good it didn't get a sequel. I like it for being unique in that way, plus it's just an accurate depiction of everyday life in Moscow.

Хардкор (original name btw) is the most visually impressive movie I ever seen in my entire life - it simply looks straight up real. More real than ANY movie I ever seen. Looked straight up impossible to do because your brain knows that it should be faked somehow, but your eyes can't catch any issues. When I found out how cheap it was, it impressed me even more. It's the best action movie ever created. I just wish it was filmed in higher framerate (and all other movies, that low framerate freaking sucks some massive donkey balls). Those "cinematic" 24hz is sooooo hard to watch on big screen here because the whole screen constantly moves. And the bigger the screen is - the more your brain starts to fight it. Also, Copley is insanely good actor and this movie allowed him to shine.

i have nothing against CGI, i just think they should fuse Practical Effects WITH CGI more often, it looks so much better because the physical interactions make the whole scene realistic due to having stuff react.

"No sci-fi film ever predicted the iPhone..." TO THE CONTRARY, it was predicted MANY TIMES. DICK TRACY had a tv wrist phone back in the '60s. JULES VERNE wrote "Paris in the 29th Century" in 1900 which predicted such and the internet, as did "The Machine Stops", a short story by E. M. Forster in 1909.

@@alexfilma16 because they are still at full-scale war against Ukraine and you may think smth like "art is outside of politics" but that's totally not true, especially with russia because consuming their content (movies/music/literature etc) generates them money via taxes which are then heavily used to continue the war by advacing trough the front line, shelling Ukrainian cities with rockets, killing and terrorizing civilians so please, think if it is really worth it to "just watch" their movies at cost of supporing their war (even in the least amount) and the creator of this video should have thought about this too because we as a civilized society should isolate russia, cut their resources and force to stop the war instead of popularizing their content 🤦‍♂

Hardcore Henry is one of my favourite action movies ever, it has that bit of flavour from the 70s and 80s of whimsical and over the top yet simple/plain plots that just allows you to enjoy them like a little kid without grinding your gears with deep and complex moralities and lessons. I just hope the whole team involved were happy and satisfied with the end product because this is just the type of movie that can only happen once, lightning in a bottle, you need passion, talent, luck and that point of recklessness only people who value the results over the means can get sometimes, i.e. the scene where they run over the bridge with 0 safety measures under them. I'd sure love to see some other good POV movies, but i doubt they'll ever happen unless the right people get together under the perfect circumstances for it again.

The Thing from john Carpenter is the other "most alien, alien". It was chaotic but also warped anything it could copy far beyond anything we can relate with on Earth. Not only it built tension like no other movies could but when The Thing was revealing itself, it did in the most alien way possible by not showing its true self but by absolutely corrupting anything it came across in the most lethal and grotesque way possible. Master piece i can't watch today because that "Thing" scarred me for life.
